Chana Dal

Chana Dal is a popular Punjabi main course recipe. Made with chana dal/bengal gram, this easy lunch/dinner recipe is rich in protein and can be served with roti or rice. It is a simple yet delicious recipe which can be made on days when you donot feel like preparing an elaborate meal. Indulge in this delicious affair by pairing it with some jeera rice pulao.


Ingredients
  • 100 gm chana dal
  • 2 chopped tomato
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered turmeric
  • 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 chopped green chilli
  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • salt as required

Recipe

  1. Soak chana dal in water for 2 hours. Wash it and transfer it in a pressure cooker. Add 1/2 tablespoon of salt and 1 cup of water. Heat pressure cooker on medium flame and after one whistle lower the flame and cook for 7-8 minutes. Switch off the burner after 5-6 whistles.
  2. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a deep pan over moderate flame and add cumin seeds and onions. Saute the onions until golden brown. Grind tomatoes and green chillies to make a thick paste. Add ginger- garlic paste in the pan and then add tomato paste.
  3. Stir for 2-4 minutes. Now add salt,turmeric powder, red chilli powder, coriander powder, garam masala and hing. Mix well. Now remove the lid of the cooker and transfer chana dal to the pan. Mix well and cook for 4-5 minutes.
  4. Once done, transfer the dal to a serving bowl and garnish with some coriander leaves. Serve hot with chappatis or rice.
